A company making products that keep firefighters safe is expanding its presence in Colorado and creating new jobs.
Piezo Technologies just opened a 7,000-square-foot product-development center in Broomfield. Jim Dallas, the vice president of engineering at Piezo, says eight people are already working at the new facility, and 12 more jobs will be created within the next four years.
"We've come to Colorado to tap the high-tech, entrepreneurial, creative-engineering workforce that lives here," Dallas said.
Piezo makes a personal-alert safety system for firefighters that sets off a high-volume alarm if a firefighter becomes incapacitated in an emergency, allowing others to locate and rescue the fallen firefighter.
"The alarm can survive temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit and produces over 100 decibels at 3 meters," Dallas said. "That would be like someone blowing on a trumpet standing 10 feet away. "
In addition to safety devices, Piezo also makes products for the oil and gas industry.
