BOULDER -Webroot Software Inc. announced Monday it has acquired Prevx Limited, a British software company that, like Webroot, makes Internet security products.
Webroot, which is based in Boulder, is perhaps best known for its Spy Sweeper anti-spyware software. It is increasingly moving to become a provider of cloud security, and the purchase of Prevx furthers that aim, chief executive Dick Williams said in a release.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Prevx makes software that protects home PCs, corporate networks and mobile devices using real-time cloud technology to understand when malicious files or processes are attempting to attack, which the company says is faster and more effective than traditional signature-based detection.
The acquisition continues Webroot's efforts to expand its cloud-security portfolio. Earlier in the year it purchased website classification company BrightCloud, and in July Webroot introduced its first cloud-security product for consumers, Webroot Internet Security Complete.
"Webroot has been moving more security off of the desktop and into the cloud in order to deliver better protection as a service to our customers," Williams said. "Together Webroot and Prevx will deliver on our promise of providing our customers the best security service in the world. We believe this is a seminal event not just for our company but for our industry."
