This year “Career Connections” Will Serve Over 200 students in Denver Public Schools in collaboration with Colorado Tech Companies to Fuel Student Interest in Tech Jobs
Denver, CO — Beginning January 2015, the Colorado Technology Foundation’s “Career Connections” program has provided job shadow opportunities for students in the technology field with events scheduled in collaboration with local tech firms and Denver Public Schools. This fall, additional job shadow opportunities are underway on October 7, October 14, October 16, November 5 and November 17 with various companies and startups in the Denver-metro area.
On the job shadow visits, students learn about career pathways, future career opportunities, information about the companies and respective industries. Students also engage with employee mentors in half-day experiential activities. 100 students have engaged in the program prior to summer vacation and another 100 are estimated to participate in the fall of 2015. “This opportunity gives the students a meaningful experience, encouraging them to not only graduate from high school but also connect into their careers,” said Alex West, Foundation Director.
Members of the Colorado Technology Association (CTA) will host students as a way to incite more interest from Colorado students in technology careers as they groom the workforce of the future. The project is being funded through AT&T Aspire, aimed to connect non-profits and students to mentors to provide opportunities to learn life skills and about diverse career paths, and ultimately understand what mentees are learning today connects to their success tomorrow.
“Our hope is to help create more student interest in the tech industry from here in Colorado, so that we reinvest in our state workforce with local talent,” said Roberta Robinette, President- AT&T Colorado. “AT&T is a long supporter CTA and now the Foundation. Through AT&T Aspire, we are committed to developing our workforce of the future by helping students succeed.”
“Career Connections” has collaborated with Colorado tech companies and organizations such as the City & County of Denver, HomeAdvisor, Ping Identity, Swiftpage, Universal Mind, Zayo Group for mentoring opportunities to encourage technology careers for underserved students in the Denver-metro area.
The Colorado Technology Association launched a Foundation in 2014, The Colorado Technology Foundation, with the mission to develop the tech talent pipeline of the future through programs and strategic initiatives. January 2015 launched the Foundation's Career Connections program, bringing underserved high school students interested in a career in technology to tech companies in the Denver area.
