DPS Innovation Lab Hosts Design for Equity Challenge

Lab Gives $80K, funded from the Janus Capital Group, for Innovative EdTech Ideas led by Students, Teachers and the Community

(DENVER, CO, MAY 25, 2015) — The Imaginarium at Denver Public Schools announced today that it will be giving away up to $20,000 to four ideas that help solve an educational problem through new technology. Funding for this endeavor is generously sponsored by the Janus Capital Group as a part of their $2.1M grant to DPS via the DPS Foundation in support of Blended Learning in DPS schools.

The Design Challenge is open to the public and is a chance for students, parents, educators, entrepreneurs and the community to come together to help solve educational problems in Denver Public Schools. Everyone is welcome to attend and/or pitch an idea. The four winning teams will be paired with local developers to assist in turning their ideas into real solutions.

"DPS launched the Imaginarium as a way to spread innovation across the school district,” said Sarabeth Berk, Innovation Program Manager at Denver Public Schools. "The Design Challenge is a way to engage all stakeholders by giving them a voice in transforming education. It’s time we create opportunities to make new ideas possible.”

The pitch night of the Design Challenge will take place at High Tech Elementary School on June 10, 2015 from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. The audience will be invited to vote on their favorite ideas with six ideas moving on to the next round. The finalists will be invited back the next day, June 11, to consult with local technology experts on feasibility and implementation from 8:30 A.M. till 2:00 P.M. Final presentations will be given to the panel of judges from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. The four winners will be announced at 5 P.M.

"In order to truly transform outcomes for children, we must provide the space for new ideas to be tested, proven and scaled,” said Kristin Colon, President & CEO at Denver Public School Foundation. "Private support, like the incredibly generous support received from Janus, enables DPS to identify, incubate, evaluate and ultimately replicate the highest-performing and most exciting strategies to help children achieve their full potential.”

The night will be both fun and entertaining as well as a great way to connect with other educational change agents. Food, games, music and other activities will be provided.

Attendance is free and registration is required. Attendees must RSVP by end of day on June 9, 2015 on Eventbrite at
