The New Voice of the CIO

In a fast-moving business environment, how can today's Chief Information Officer make the biggest impact on behalf of the entire organization? 

To answer this question, IBM listened to over 2,500 CIOs worldwide.  One-hour face-to-face conversations, along with other statistical and financial analysis, proved true that there are many changing demands on CIOs.  These executives are not content to be known only as IT experts or perpetual seekers of savings for their company.  Instead, CIOs are redefining their role.

This panel will highlight this "new voice of the CIO," and how they must reconcile seemingly opposing mindsets.  You will learn how successful CIOs are blending roles.  These roles seem contradictory, but they are actually complementary.  Gain insight around traits and characteristics of these roles and how they are assisting CIOs to achieve their business goals and priorities.

Kristi Graning, SVP, IT and eBusiness, RE/MAX International
Kristi Graning has established a strong reputation for quick delivery of innovative tech-based services to RE/MAX agents and offices.  In a recent multiyear project, Graning and her team achieved a major industry first: seamlessly gathering property-for-sale listings from across the United States onto, while complying with widely differing Multiple Listing Service policies. The industry-changing effort positioned RE/MAX as the first sales organization to provide public access to all of the listings in thousands of cities and towns.  Today, with millions of visitors, frequently ranks among the industry's most-visited Web sites. Graning's team also is responsible for RE/MAX LeadStreet, which has referred more than 7 million visitors to RE/MAX agents and offices with no referral fee ever going to RE/MAX International. 

John Kirkpatrick, SVP and CIO. TransFirst Holdings
John brings more than 23 years of leadership experience in developing and implementing complex business strategies for global companies.  Prior to joining TransFirst, Mr. Kirkpatrick was Vice President, Global Strategic Planning for Sunrise Medical Inc., a global medical equipment company.  Throughout his eight years at Sunrise, he held various executive roles and had numerous responsibilities including global IT, M&A system integration, corporate governance and policies, operations, and product support functions, as well as the implementation of a secure, online transaction system.  Mr. Kirkpatrick also has served Baxter Healthcare Corporation and E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company/Conoco Inc. 

Chris Laping, Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Red Robin
Chris Laping brings more than 19 years of experience in information technology to Red Robin.  As Chief Information Officer, Chris oversees the information technology operations and leads the development and execution of the company's technology and information management strategies.  Prior to joining Red Robin, Chris worked at Statera, Inc. as the Chief Information Officer and Principal where he managed business consulting engagements and oversaw the internal technology department. Before working as a consultant, Chris spent five years as a Vice President and Chief Information Officer for GMAC.  Chris has received several awards for his work in the IT industry including being named as a ComputerWorld Premier 100 IT Leader in 2004 as well as receiving three InfoWorld 100 awards.  Chris is originally from Jacksonville, FL.  He received a Bachelor's of Science in Management Information Systems at Florida State University and his Master of Business Administration at the University of Florida.

Michael Marcotte, CIO – Global Head of Information Technology, EchoStar
Michael is the Global Head of Information Technology (CIO) for the EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:SATS) with full responsibility for the worldwide, information technology organization.  Prior to EchoStar, Michael has provided leadership for public and private sector firms such as Ball Corporation, Dish Network, Cendant, MCA Universal, Systems Partners, Hyatt, Hilton, and numerous other Fortune 500 and Russell 2000 firms.  Michael has helped these corporations build and implement successful IT organizations, IT governance, program offices, software development models, and extensive business process engineering. Michael has built Program Management Offices (PMO) for several large firms and speaks to groups regularly on the topic of building, managing, use of toolsets, and the strategic and tactical implementation of PMO in large corporations.

Diane Sharrock, IT Director, CH2M Hill
Diane is currently an IT Director for a large, engineering company based in Denver, Colorado – CH2M HILL.  She is truly a "global” professional.  After graduating from the University of Washington with a BA in Economics she ventured overseas, biking across Australia.  She began her professional career working and living in the outback, providing accounting and IT services at an abattoirs and casino for 3 years.  Upon returning to the US after extensive travel through Southeast Asia she began working with CH2M HILL in 1989.  In her 20 years with the company she had helped build a world class IT shop across their global business by building strategic plans, managing large IT project rollouts (Oracle HRMS, BackOffice, MS Exchange, Technical Help Desk, Disaster Recovery data center, etc.) and eventually helping to manage their global IT infrastructure and people.
