One of the most exciting new additions to the SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) suite is the new SSAS Tabular instance that has been created for surfacing Business Intelligence Semantic Models (BISM). What is that you say? What are BISM models? BISM models are the next generation of the work that started with PowerPivot taking these business developed models and allowing them to go to the next level and become enterprise ready with additions to the feature set that add on partitioning, hierarchies, KPIs, security roles and many other additions. We will take you through the process of building out one of these models starting with Excel’s PowerPivot add-in and showing you the natural progression and the ability to extend this model using Visual Studio’s new SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT).
