5 Key Factors for Organizational Change

Moving an organization in the direction of sustainability involves both systems change and behavioral change. Unfortunately, a large percentage of planned change efforts fail. What characterizes successful efforts? Chris presents a brief background on what we know about individual change and then distills the voluminous literature on organizational change into five key factors that can be easily remembered and readily used by executives, managers, and supervisors.

Aimee Kane, City of Boulder, Department of Community Planning & Sustainability:Aimee will present some of the techniques her department used to achieve their vision of a more sustainable department while aligning their goals with the City organization during tough economic times. She will also discuss her group's emphasis on teaming and efforts to cross train the Administrative Services and front counter staff to better suit customer service goals and make the best use of the resources.

Dan King, Boulder Outlook Hotel & Suites: Dan will share his perspective on organizational change management forsustainabilityat the Boulder Outlook Hotel & Suites,Boulder`s first zero waste hotel. His story will reveal successes and challenges towards becoming more sustainable operation.

Jeff Yorzyk, Senior Consultant, PE INTERNATIONAL & Five Winds Strategic Consulting:The development and implementation of strategic management approaches for driving sustainability requires a suite of change management approaches that are not always anticipated and are frequently poorly applied or even ignored. These critical success factors can make or break a good strategy before it even gets off the ground. Jeff will present some of the tools he commonly uses in his consulting practice, discussing their use and value in creating a common agenda for sustainability.
